Some parents tend to name their children the same names of grandparents' names, in other words, they name one of the family descendants after the name of the father or even the mother. Whether a boy or a girl, children can't decide or give their opinions about their names.

Actually, this tendency is not only in Islam, but also in many other
religions and cultures amongst which Christianity is one. However, it is not obligatory among cultures.

Parents, whether mothers or fathers feel happy when they hear and see their names embodied in their beloved. How sweet and divine!!!! Imagine ..you can live with your mom n dad even though you are far away from them… How pleasant !!!! This is how some parents feel.

But guys, sometimes names and specially the old ones are unfair for the children and I have many instances. I believe those who got ugly names shouldn't repeat their parents' mistakes and pass the name on. Many people hate themselves because of their names and they sometimes become psychos!!!

Ladies & gentlemen, I wanna ask you the following Qs

1- Did your parents do the same? In other words, is your name the same as one of your grandparents?

2- What is your opinion of such a habit?

3- Do you REALLY like your name?

4-What is your favorite name/s?

BEST WISHES

Of Islam, and tradition is the reason you mentioned in the repetition, but I think that the reason lies in the love of the names containing the word Abd
For me, I love my name because I rarely meet a person with this name
Preferred Name for me all the names whatsoever except those containing the word Abd

Long as you are okay

of course we can't decide or give our opinions about our names because this is something out of our ability isn’t it hhhh
But when we grow up there may be a chance for us to choose and change the name that have been chosen for us by our parents
And I agree with you that many people till now call their children
Names that are not acceptable in this age
For instance they may call there child a name that comes form fruits or animals and even a name that has funny meaning I don’t know what was going on in their heads

For me thank goodness that I don’t have that type of parents
And they didn’t call us any name which may make us feel shy when somebody ask us what is you mane.
By the way my name is far from my grandmother’s one although here name was so beautiful (SARA )
I may name it for my daughter one day hhhh

I think that parents should be aware when naming their child
They have to put in their accounts that each age have specific things and we some times are obliged to accept them even if they are against our will
For each generation has its own line in life
And this is something that should be moved away I mean this habit
And we have to think about our child’s future
And manes are some thing that is so very important in mans life because it adds to your personality more confidence a power

I Like my name its modern at least hhhhh

My favorite names are :
Yasmeen - Saze - Sorgul (of course ) -
Lilian - laylan _ Ruziv _ Rwhayv - khunav

That was just what I remember for now but there are so many other names that I really like them

Thanks Mr.Taha for this great topic
My regards

Thanks for being honest ' expressing your views about your names and the names you like'.

For you Janee, I think you are lucky coz you know the meaning of your name, but I don't know the meaning of my name; only God knows what it refers to. A lot of people think that (Taha) is one of the names of the Prophet Muhammad, but I don't agree with them coz ( Taha ) is the same as (Yaseen, Alf/Lam/mim…etc ). However, Taha is a short name, easy to memorize ( if someone forgets it I tell him Al-aia in Qur'an so he can never forge it again) and not a lot of people are used to name their children.

As far as Hinry is concerned, I wanna say that may God bless your little daughter , Zozan, it is really a beautiful name. I think we add more beauty to our names by our nice actions in everyday life activities. Unfortunately, people do exactly the opposite, through their bad actions, their names remind the others of bad actions although names are so meaningful.

Hold on Mr. Shorsh!! Is the reason behind eliminating the name Abd lies in the fact that it is used so much?

The problem with a lot of Muslims is that they misunderstand ISLAM. They think that by naming their child an Islamic name as (Abdu Allah, Muhammad, Fatima….etc,) they think by this, they have done something very extraordinary. ISLAM is not only about names, it is the matter of the whole life. Unfortunately, most of Muslims nowadays are Muslims by names not by their actions because working hard, being honest & creative & serious…etc, will be against their traditional lives and cost them a lot .......… then they will need to pay the price daily , but are they ready??? Only the minority

Concerning Sorgul, I think what you say is in the same line of my point. For the name Sara, I think it will be very suitable for both: kids & adults, but there are names which are only appropriate for the young as Jooan, Delsher, Kawa, Anas…etc, so when those guys get old I will then have the felling that they are still young.
